PTA Meetings are open to all parents, teachers, guardians, family members, and community members.

Meetings are held in the South Orangetown Middle School Library once a month.  If a meeting is canceled, rescheduled or there is a time change we will email members. If we are unable to meet in person, we will hold our meeting via ZOOM.  Please check our Facebook or Instagram page for the most current information.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES 
Below is a description of the SOMS PTA job functions and committees. We offer various volunteer opportunities designed to suit everyone’s schedule. Certain PTA roles are fulfilled by just one or two individuals or by those elected to the Executive Committee while other committees provide options, both large and small, for multiple parent volunteers.

    What is a PTA?
    PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association. PTA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit association that prides itself on being a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for public education.

    What does the PTA do?
    The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is a partnership between parents and educators who strive to enhance student learning and enrich the lives of the students within the school. It is also a forum for parents to obtain knowledge and voice their opinions about what is happening in their school.

    What can I do to help enhance my student’s education?
    A key way to show support and involvement is by becoming a PTA member. Your membership helps support valuable enrichment programs and equipment that SOMS otherwise could not afford. Through PTA membership you can participate in your child’s education by volunteering for a committee, attending meetings, voting on important PTA decisions, and providing ideas and feedback. Whatever level of involvement you choose, your time and efforts show your child that you care about their education.

    Why is membership important?
    The more members we have, the more our children feel supported, and the more we can support them within the school by sponsoring assemblies, social events, and educational support.

    What are the benefits of joining?
    The PTA benefits parents as well as students/staff/school. PTA functions are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, build rapport and discuss issues that are on your mind. Joining the PTA also means you get a “VOICE and a VOTE” in helping shape the education of your child at South Orangetown Middle School. Every dollar we spend is debated and voted on by the membership at our meetings.

    Who can join?
    SOMS PTA is an inclusive organization that is open to all adults who care about children and schools. It is made up of parents, guardians, family, friends, teachers, and members/business owners of the community.

    How do I join?
    Joining is simple! Go to http://soms.memberhub.com/store   Select individual or family membership. $15 per parent/family member/teacher and $5 for students. Your membership will need to be renewed every year.  Membership expires June 30th.

    What do my dues pay for?
    We send a small portion ($4) to the NY State PTA national offices. In return, local PTAs and members receive access to many valuable resources, discounts, information, grants, support, and training programs.  Be sure to visit http://nyspta.org to see what your $15 membership entitles you to!

    How can I volunteer?
    We have many opportunities for parents to volunteer and make a difference at the school. There are ways to help even if you work full time or have younger children in your care. If you would like to volunteer, please fill out the volunteer form below with your preferences. Be sure to also check out our Volunteer Info Tab(s) for more information.

    How can I keep updated on SOMS PTA information, activities, and events?
    We use a variety of ways to keep you informed besides this website.  We have our weekly Wednesday “Red White” email that is sent from the district, Our Facebook Page, and you can follow us on Instagram at SOMSPTA.  We also will send home forms on occasion but we really want to reduce our carbon footprint by encouraging our families to join us online!
